The PowerPlane

The PowerPlane system consists of a sailplane flying patterns in the sky connected to a generator on the ground through a tether. The system generates power as the cable is unwound from the drum located at the ground. more

Dutch Airspace Authorities approve Ampyx Power flight operations as an Unmanned Aerial System

This approval was based on an elaborate safety analysis by Ampyx Power of the PowerPlane system and operation.

In this official approval, which can be found in the Staatscourant, the Dutch Airspace Authorities have classified the PowerPlane as a special class of Unmanned Arial system (UAS). As a result, the PowerPlane system is the first Airborne Wind Energy system worldwide that has aquired formal flight approval as an UAS.

This approval is the first step towards a regulatory framework for future certification of Airborne Wind Energy Systems in commercial operation.
