Start of aircraft nr. 5 test campaign

Ampyx Power has completed development of its nr. 5 aircraft. Based on the test results of earlier prototype systems and a full safety analysis, this carbon aircraft includes critical improvements with regards to safety features, structural design, control software and weight. Through spring and summer of 2012 Ampyx Power will test autonomous power generation with this aircraft at its restricted airspace test facility in the Netherlands. Photographs

Ampyx Power forerunner in flight approval as an UAS from Dutch airspace authorities

At the International Civil Unmanned Aircraft System Event 2012 which was held at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, a presentation from the Civil Aviation Authority revealed that Ampyx Power is one of only three companies that is currently holding a formal flight approval as an UAS. This leading position underlines the significance of the elaborate safety analysis of the PowerPlane system and operation conducted for obtaining the approval.

Ampyx Power presents at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics ATIO conference

The 11th Aviation, Technology, Integration and Operations Conference (ATIO) is organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics 20-22 September 2011. NASA is hosting a conference special session on transformational flight, a showcase for new emergent markets in aviation amongst which airborne wind energy where Ampyx Power is presenting the PowerPlane technology.

GL Garrad Hassan issues market report on High Altitude Wind Energy

International renewable energy consultancy, GL Garrad Hassan, has issued the first market report which analyses the burgeoning new industry of High Altitude Wind Energy (HAWE). HAWE systems are designed to tap into the high velocity, stable air currents that exist at altitudes anywhere from 200m to 20 km above the earth; a source for generating cheaper and more abundant electricity than current wind technology.
The report looks at the potential of high altitude winds as an energy source, the current technologies within the sector and their potential as mature systems. As well as assessing individual technologies and the companies developing them, the report addresses the technical and regulatory challenges faced by the industry and the likelihood of its success.

Dutch Airspace Authorities approve Ampyx Power flight operations as an Unmanned Aerial System

This approval was based on an elaborate safety analysis by Ampyx Power of the PowerPlane system and operation.

In this official approval, which can be found in the Staatscourant, the Dutch Airspace Authorities have classified the PowerPlane as a special class of Unmanned Arial system (UAS). As a result,  the PowerPlane system is the first Airborne Wind Energy system worldwide that has aquired formal flight approval as an UAS.

This approval is the first step towards a regulatory framework for future certification of Airborne Wind Energy Systems in commercial operation.

Article on Ampyx Power and Airborne Wind in the Washington Post

Start-ups are devising kites to turn wind power into a cheap source of power, the goal: to create a self-piloting kite, or something like one, that flies day and night and generates energy from the wind. The prize: potential riches, and renewable energy that proponents say will be cheaper, safer and more plentiful than fossil fuels or nuclear power. Read the whole article

NASA starts study on Airborne Wind Turbines

A system study is being conducted by NASA to better understand the potential of airborne wind turbines to meet future U.S. energy needs.  These airborne flight vehicles are tethered to the ground and capable of extracting energy at altitudes where wind speeds are higher and more consistent.  Even at altitudes as low as 2000 ft, which could be accommodated through FAA Part 77 Ground Obstruction regulations, wind speeds are more than twice that of ground-based wind turbine systems, with the potential for 8x higher power extraction and capacity factors that are 2x greater.  Higher altitudes provide even more opportunity for increased power density and wind consistency.
