Brennels was founded by the entrepreneurial family Crébas-Wobma. During the 80’s, Bob Crébas and Carla Wobma were involved in the foundation of the Goedzooi recycling store. In the early 90’s this evolved into Het Goed, a chain of 17 recycling stores spread about the Netherlands. At the end of the 90’s they became involved in Marktplaats.nl, the largest auction site in the Netherlands. Bob and Carla’s children, Frank and Robin, also started working at Marktplaats.nl and Het Goed. In 2004 Markplaats.nl was sold to Ebay and Het Goed was sold to the Management team at that time. In 2004 the family recognized the environmentally friendly promise of nettles and decided to start the Brennels company.
