Documentary BNN/VARA: Ockels erfenis (heritage)
On 18 May 2019, 5 years after the death of astronaut, physicist and pilot Wubbo Ockels, a documentary was broadcasted on BNN Vara about his “legacy".
Wubbo Ockels was the first Dutchman in space. Like most astronauts who have seen the Earth from a distance, Ockels returned as a different person. He saw our planet in all its vulnerability and knew: we have to be careful with this, there is only one: We’re all Astronauts or Spaceship Earth.
Back on earth, he launched various sustainable projects: kites to generate energy, an electric superbus, a sustainable ship.
Wubbo is seen as the European nestor of Airborne Wind Energy. He researched the possibilities and theory behind the Airborne Wind Energy concept as a professor at TU Delft. Ampyx Power’s Richard Ruiterkamp and Michiel Kruijff worked together with Ockels and were interviewed in our workshop in The Hague by documentary maker Daan Alkemade about his inventions and motives.
